What is the Backshop?

The Backshop is a blog. A newsletter. A space for me (Naum Milyavskiy) to release the thoughts and clippings and reels and soundbites that never made it into a final art product.

The name is inspired by a suggestion from the Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne that folks keep a space for themselves behind their shops where they can write and think in solitude.

The Backshop is a blog for the marginalia of my creative life. And in the spirit of Montaigne, that marginalia comes together here to become a work of its own.

How often do you post?

If TikTok and Instagram belong to Freud’s id, the Backshop is the domain of my ego, and on good days, my superego. Posts happen as frequently as inspiration strikes.

Why should I subscribe?

For any combination of the following reasons:

1) You find my writing entertaining
2) You find my writing useful
3) You have some eyeball minutes to spare in this dog-watch-dog attention economy
